Social Studies/ History
Objective: To select proverbs that illustrate the character or beliefs of a historical figure.
Materials: Definition Cards, chart paper, & markers
Procedures:
- Practice using definition cards. Ask students to challenge each other to figure out
the appropriate meaning of each card.
- Ask the class to brainstorm historical events or people that they have studied. Have
the class choose one person or event.
- Each group of students should receive ten definition cards to look through to find
cards that would represent the character and/ or actions of the historical figure or the
chosen event.
- Discuss and support chosen proverbs. List key phrases on the board.
- After the students have compiled an event or character profile with proverbs, ask
them to look at the original list of historical events and people. In groups of four -
five students have the students use the definition cards to create a profile of
another event or character.
Hint: Some of the definition cards are already written in this way, Others give definition
choices with correct answers in bold print.
Here are samples of proverbs that could easily connect to historical figures/ events:
- A babe in the woods
- To burn your bridges
- Blood is thicker than water
- A wolf in sheep's clothing
- There is safety in numbers.
- Supply students with markers and chart paper to creatively display their character
profiles.
- Challenge the students to go home and create a proverbial profile of themselves
and check to see if their family members agree with what they wrote!
