Literature/ The Phantom Tollbooth

Objective: To motivate students to read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, which is brimming with word play and proverbs. Materials: Proverbial Wisdom

Procedures:

  1. Discuss the nature and evolution of proverbs.

  2. Discuss how proverbs apply to everyday life.

  3. As a pre-activity before the students read the novel, play Proverbial Wisdom for motivation.

  4. While students read the novel, challenge the students to keep a list of every proverb they encounter in their reading. Ask the students to find the correct meanings or interpretations.

  5. Play the game again at the conclusion of the novel to reinforce their understanding of proverbs and word play.

  6. Students should self-assess their growth in their knowledge of proverbs in this post- activity.
