Literature/ The Phantom Tollbooth
Objective: To motivate students to read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, which is
brimming with word play and proverbs.
Materials: Proverbial Wisdom
Procedures:
- Discuss the nature and evolution of proverbs.
- Discuss how proverbs apply to everyday life.
- As a pre-activity before the students read the novel, play Proverbial Wisdom for
motivation.
- While students read the novel, challenge the students to keep a list of every proverb
they encounter in their reading. Ask the students to find the correct meanings or
interpretations.
- Play the game again at the conclusion of the novel to reinforce their understanding of
proverbs and word play.
- Students should self-assess their growth in their knowledge of proverbs in this post-
activity.
