Language Arts/ Grammar

Objective: To review or reinforce selected parts of speech. To review the terms literal and figurative.

Materials: Sketch Cards from Proverbial Wisdom, Drawing Paper, & Markers

Procedures:

  1. Distribute one random sketch card to groups of 2 - 3 students.

  2. Students should look carefully at the proverb and decide on the meaning.

  3. Give out drawing paper and have students draw the proverb literally. The class should guess the proverb from the drawing. The presenting group should lead a discussion of the proverb’s figurative meaning.

  4. The proverb should be written on the board and students should identify the assigned parts of speech as a grammar activity.
    Example: A needle in the haystack

    Identify articles: a, the

    Identify nouns: needle, haystack

    Identify prepositional phrase: in the haystack

  5. Students should copy down five more proverbs from the cards and continue to draw pictures and answer grammar questions.
